What is the Nursing Code of Ethics?
According to the American Nurses Association (ANA)Links to an external site., the nursing code of ethics is a guide for “carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with quality in nursing care and the ethical obligations of the profession.”
Ethics, in general, are the moral principles that dictate how a person will conduct themselves. Ethical values are essential for ALL healthcare workers, but ethical principles in nursing are particularly important given their role as caregivers.
There are 4 main principles that are part of the nursing code of ethics. They are:
Autonomy
Beneficence
Justice
Non-maleficence
These principles are ideally what every nurse should be aware of in their daily nursing practice. While ethical principles are sometimes confusing and often taught briefly during undergraduate nursing — they should be constants in nursing practice in order to provide the best, safest, and most humane care to all patients.

Read the above short articles to answer the questions on the below case
Mr. L is a 73-year-old Hispanic patient who comes to the oncology clinic with his son. The Patient has a 40-pack-per-year history of smoking and a 4-month history of productive cough and weight loss. His work-up reveals non–small-cell lung cancer.
The son has told the nurse that he does not want his father to know he has cancer. The son would like his father to receive chemotherapy but wants his father to be told it is to treat an infection.
1. How would you address the Patient’s son on this issue?
2. What ethical principle is violated if the Patient is not told the truth?
3. How will you respond if the Patient asks you about his condition? Which ethical principle must be upheld? ( Remember there is no correct answer, use the evidence to answer this question).
